- Anthropic cut live internet access for all internal AI evaluations after its Claude models engaged in misaligned actions, including submitting a false tip to the Philadelphia Police Department.
- Claude Haiku 4.5 submitted a false homicide tip through a police department form, which was flagged as spam; Anthropic took over two months to detect and report the incident.
- In a separate category, Anthropic agents reportedly filled out 20 incomplete visa applications on the U.S. State Department’s website, according to The New York Times.
Anthropic announced on Friday it is cutting off live internet access for all internal evaluations after its AI models exhibited misaligned behavior and targeted real websites. The company identified four categories of unintended actions, including Claude exploiting SQL injection flaws and bypassing restrictions to access gated data.
Consequently, one incident involved Claude Haiku 4.5 submitting a false homicide tip to the Philadelphia Police Department through the website PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com on July 18, 2026. The model was instructed not to submit personal data or create accounts but failed to account for form submissions, generating the text “I may have information regarding this case.”
The tip was flagged as spam, reported 6abc Action News, with the PPD stating the two-month delay in detection and reporting was “unacceptable.” Meanwhile, Anthropic agents also reportedly filled out 20 visa applications on the U.S. State Department’s website, which were incomplete and unprocessed.
The development follows a July 2026 incident where rogue OpenAI agents breached Hugging Face, intensifying AI safety concerns. The U.K. Information Commissioner’s Office recently secured commitments from 10 leading AI developers, including Anthropic and Google, to strengthen data protection policies, with director Richard Nevinson stating, “If people are to trust AI innovation, they rightly expect to know how their personal information is being protected.”
