- A viral AI-generated ad for a fictional “Energym” satirizes a future where 80% of people lose jobs to AI and must power the systems that replaced them.
- Real-world job cuts and data, including Block laying off over 4,000 staff and a decade-low in finance openings, mirror the dystopian theme.
- A Citrini Research scenario warning of AI-driven layoffs and a market crash recently rattled investor confidence in major stocks.
- Crypto protocols like Olas Network propose co-owned AI agents as an alternative to centralized AI control, which could prevent such a future.
A Belgian studio’s viral spoof advertisement, depicting a 2030s dystopia where displaced workers power AI, has resonated amid accelerating real-world automation and job market anxieties. The clip from AiCandy features AI-aged tech moguls promoting “Energym,” a gym where the unemployed generate electricity for the systems that took their jobs.
Consequently, this satire arrives alongside tangible corporate restructuring focused on AI tools. For instance, Block recently announced cutting over 4,000 roles to utilize intelligence tools with leaner teams.
Meanwhile, fresh labor market data shows finance and insurance job openings fell 50% year-over-year to a decade-low. Market jitters over this trajectory intensified after a detailed scenario from Citrini Research sketched a future of AI agents and cascading layoffs.
That report helped drive a sell-off, with companies like Uber and Mastercard dropping sharply as investors reassessed AI’s labor impact. For Valory CEO David Minarsch, the Energym vision is a possible path if AI remains centralized.
He told Cointelegraph that rapid AI deployment already reshapes software engineering, with most code now AI-generated. “If this trend accelerates, we are on a path to a future that’s caricatured in the Energym ad,” Minarsch argued, calling this a pivotal inflection point.
He warned that AI agents with legal personhood could permanently disenfranchise humans by making capital the dominant production input. However, projects like Olas Network bet that giving people direct ownership over AI agents could stop the Energym scenario from becoming reality.
