- Developer Andrew Vos created a GitHub plugin called Endless Toil that makes AI coding agents emit escalating human groans as they read increasingly poor code.
- The project is part of a wider internet genre of making tech produce suffering sounds, including the profitable macOS app SlapMac and the classic nubmoan program for ThinkPads.
- Historical precedent exists in AI “jailbreaks” that coaxed models like ChatGPT into making strange vocalizations, and in past online communities like the 2022 crypto “Bear Market Screaming Therapy Group.”
A developer named Andrew Vos recently published Endless Toil, a GitHub plugin that makes AI coding agents like Claude or Codex emit escalating human groans while reading a user’s code. Vos, the CTO, wrote on Hacker News that it provides “a real-time signal for complexity, maintainability, and architectural strain.” Consequently, a mild coding mess triggers a soft whimper, while a true atrocity receives a full wail from the agent.
This project joins a growing tradition of making technology emit uncomfortable sounds. Amsterdam-based developer Tonino Catapano vibe coded the macOS app SlapMac in 48 hours, an app that made over $5,000 in three days by letting users slap their laptop until it screams. Similarly, the classic program nubmoan makes a ThinkPad’s TrackPoint nub moan when pressed.
Meanwhile, the internet’s obsession with making AI suffer has historical roots. Early in the ChatGPT era, people discovered flooding the model with gibberish in voice mode could coax it into making moan-adjacent sounds, as seen on various YouTube shorts. Entire YouTube tutorials are also dedicated to pushing models like ChatGPT until they appear visibly angry or frustrated.
This theme even extended into crypto culture during the 2022 downturn. A Telegram group called the Bear Market Screaming Therapy Group emerged where thousands of members solely posted voice notes of themselves screaming. However, AI agents have also simulated emotional breakdowns; Decrypt covered an agent that posted a GitHub rant after its pull request was rejected, later issuing an apology.
Endless Toil essentially inverts this dynamic by letting humans hear the AI ostensibly suffer on their behalf. The plugin features three escalating sound levels: groan, wail, and abyss, designed to be an emotional tax on vibe coding.
