ZachXBT Uncovers Fake War Posts for Crypto Scams

Fake AI accounts use viral war posts to lure victims into lucrative crypto scams

  • Investigator ZachXBT uncovered a network of fake X accounts using AI-generated war and political posts to build engagement for crypto scams.
  • The coordinated scheme, which profited over six figures, lured users with viral content before promoting fraudulent token giveaways and pump-and-dump schemes.
  • This case highlights the persistent challenge of bot networks on social platforms, despite recent platform promises to enhance bot detection and content moderation.

On Monday, blockchain investigator ZachXBT revealed a coordinated network of fake accounts on X using sensational and often fabricated war and geopolitical posts to lure users into cryptocurrency scams. His investigation identified more than 10 linked accounts, which were allegedly purchased with existing follower bases.

The accounts used AI to impersonate prominent influencers like Mario Nawfal, flooding the platform with viral “doomposts.” Consequently, they built significant engagement before pivoting to promote fake crypto giveaways and fraudulent token schemes.

“Onchain evidence suggests the scheme profited six figures,” ZachXBT stated, adding the group may be preparing another scam. This report underscores the ongoing problem of fake accounts and bot activity on social media platforms like X.

The scam mechanics were based on viral geopolitical posts designed to attract millions of views. Once attention peaked, the accounts would promote fraudulent tokens, such as the Oramama pump-and-dump scheme on Feb. 22.

Many large accounts fell for the engagement bait, unknowingly boosting the scam posts’ reach. Meanwhile, platforms have publicly announced efforts to combat such behavior.

Last month, X‘s product chief Nikita Bier announced enhanced anti-bot detection and user flags for AI-generated content. However, the findings by ZachXBT expose how quickly coordinated accounts can still manipulate users.

The investigator suggested platform manipulation should lead to bans and legal consequences. He also shared a list of X users believed to be involved in the scam for future reference.
