Vitalik: Web3 ‘decentralized renaissance’ finally arrives…

Vitalik Buterin: web3’s original vision is becoming reality as Fileverse, Status and Railway Wallet reach usability

  • Vitalik Buterin says the original web3 vision is becoming a practical reality.
  • He highlighted three decentralized apps—Fileverse, Status, and Railway Wallet—as usable examples.
  • Buterin noted that in 2014 decentralized apps were “hundreds of times more difficult to use” than web2, but they have improved markedly.
  • Fileverse lets users write and collaborate on documents while preserving access even if the service shuts down.
  • He contrasted these apps with consumer devices that add invasive features or subscriptions, saying the prerequisites for a decentralized renaissance are in place.

On social media this week, Vitalik Buterin said the “original web3 vision” is coming to life, pointing to recent improvements in decentralized applications and naming three he regularly uses; he discussed these themes in a series of posts, including one on the topic of the technology’s importance posted on X.

Buterin recalled his 2014 goals for Ethereum, which included supporting finance, social media, ride sharing, governing organizations and crowdfunding. He argued that when he started, decentralised applications were impractical, noting that, “In 2014, decentralised applications were toys, hundreds of times more difficult to use [than] web2,” as he stated in another post on X.

He said development has closed that gap and gave three current examples. He listed Fileverse, saying, “In 2026, Fileverse is now usable enough that I regularly write documents in it and send them to other people to collaborate,” in a follow-up post on X. He also named Status, a self-custody wallet with encrypted messaging, and Railway Wallet, described as a “private DeFi wallet,” in another message about decentralisation on X.

Buterin praised Fileverse as an implementation that preserves user control: “Fileverse is an excellent example of the right way to do things,” noting users can retrieve and continue editing documents with an open-source UI he wrote. He contrasted these apps with consumer products that add surveillance or subscription barriers, citing reporting about smart air fryers that track owners noted by another outlet and a dishwasher that requires a subscription for full features reported elsewhere.

He concluded that the technical and social conditions for his original web3 goals exist and urged participation, writing, “All of the prerequisites for the original web3 vision are here, in full force, and are continuing to get stronger over the next few years,” and “The decentralized renaissance is coming, and you can be part of making it happen.”
