- Vitalik Buterin proposed a quantum roadmap to shield Ethereum from future encryption-cracking computers.
- The plan includes cryptographic updates, with at least one potential change slated for a 2026 upgrade called Hegota.
- The Ethereum Foundation has formed a post-quantum team and is offering a $1 million prize for quantum-resistant cryptography solutions.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin revealed a strategic roadmap on Thursday designed to fortify the blockchain against the theoretical threat of quantum computers. His proposed changes target the vulnerable cryptography that currently secures the network.
Buterin has warned that quantum computers could break Ethereum’s security before the 2028 U.S. presidential election. Consequently, his solutions aim to update the underlying encryption, moving away from the quantum-vulnerable ECDSA system.
One key proposal involves adding “frame transactions” to enable accounts using any signature algorithm. Buterin previously suggested support for including this feature in the forthcoming Hegota upgrade, expected in late 2026.
Ethereum Foundation developer Felix Lange agreed, stating frame transactions are “the most important one, because of the readiness for the post-quantum world.” However, implementing the full roadmap requires significant engineering work.
Meanwhile, the Ethereum Foundation has established a dedicated post-quantum team and launched bi-weekly security calls. The nonprofit is also offering a new $1 million prize for advancements in quantum-resistant cryptography.
Researcher Justin Drake also released a separate “strawman roadmap” that includes quantum resistance as a focus area. He wrote that an official roadmap is effectively impossible in Ethereum’s decentralized ecosystem.
The foundation is working on a website to detail a post-quantum strategy targeting a full transition with zero loss of funds.
