Vitalik Buterin: Ethereum Foundation to “Shrink” as Top Exodus

Ethereum Foundation shrinks to focus on core values, reduces ETH sales after leadership exodus.

  • Ethereum Foundation co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced the organization is shrinking to focus on core cypherpunk values under the CROPS framework.
  • The nonprofit, managing $408 million in ETH, will reduce its Ethereum sales despite facing scrutiny and an exodus of top researchers.
  • Buterin disclosed 90% of his personal net worth remains in Ethereum but welcomes his own diminishing influence within the foundation.

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin announced on Sunday that the Ethereum Foundation is dramatically narrowing its scope to become a leaner, more focused entity. This strategic pivot comes during a period of internal turbulence marked by several high-profile departures from the organization.

Buterin said the foundation is now choosing “longevity over breadth” and should be seen as just one node in Ethereum’s ecosystem. Consequently, it will refocus its remaining resources purely on the CROPS principles of censorship resistance, openness, privacy, and security.

The organization’s shift follows a wave of resignations, including two veterans last week who expressed a desire to pass the torch. Meanwhile, former top researcher Dankrad Feist advocated for a new, economically-aligned body to “save Ethereum.”

Since releasing a new mandate in March that downplayed interest in ETH’s price, several leadership members have resigned. However, under interim co-executive director Bastian Aue, the foundation is embracing this new, narrower path.

As part of this transition, the Ethereum Foundation will sell less of its Ethereum holdings. The organization currently controls roughly 0.16% of ETH’s total supply, valued at approximately $408 million.

Buterin emphasized his continued personal stake, noting that 90% of his net worth remains tied to Ethereum. He also welcomed the fact that his “own power” within the foundation will continue to decrease.

Looking forward, Buterin said the community should focus on creating a provably bug-free environment using AI. Ethereum recently traded around $2,100, according to CoinGecko data, representing a significant drop from its all-time high.
