Donald Trump, President of the United States, filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against The New York Times on Monday in federal court in Tampa, Florida. Trump claims that a 2024 book along with three articles published by the newspaper before the 2024 election harmed his reputation.
Following the announcement, NYT stock fell by 1.5% at Tuesday’s closing, a rare move for its typically stable performance. In public statements, Trump accused the paper of serving as a “mouthpiece” for Democrats and acting against his interests and those of his supporters.
The suit alleges a “decades-long pattern” of intentional and harmful reporting by The New York Times against Trump, his family, and the causes associated with his political movement. The complaint also references the newspaper’s endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 election, though this issue is not part of the formal legal claims.
In response, The New York Times said, “The lawsuit has no merit. It lacks any legitimate legal claims and instead is an attempt to stifle and discourage independent reporting.” The company stated that it would not be influenced by intimidation tactics. Despite this, investor confidence appeared shaken, as reflected in the decline of NYT share price.
Shares of The New York Times are commonly stable, moving more than 5% on only six occasions in the past year. The current price is $57.54 per share, near its 52-week high of $61.95 recorded in August 2025. Since the start of the year, the stock has risen approximately 10%.
