- TON Society celebrates Pavel Durov’s passport return and departure from France as a victory for free speech.
- Durov left for Dubai on March 15 after French authorities granted him permission to leave following his August 2024 arrest.
- Digital rights advocates, including crypto community members, had criticized France’s detention of the Telegram founder as an attack on freedom of expression.
The TON Society has issued a statement celebrating the return of Telegram founder Pavel Durov’s passport and his departure from France, framing it as a significant win for freedom of speech, privacy rights, and digital innovation in the cryptocurrency and messaging sectors.
According to AFP reports, Durov successfully departed France for Dubai on March 15 after French officials returned his travel documents and granted him permission to leave the country following his controversial detention.
“We have stood behind Pavel since his arrest on August 24, 2024,” the TON Society wrote in their official statement. They further emphasized his personal sacrifice, adding: “Pavel’s unwavering commitment to freedom of speech and transparency, despite facing the most challenging of circumstances, is a powerful reminder of the importance of standing by your principles, even when it is politically and personally detrimental to do so.”
This latest statement follows the organization’s previous advocacy efforts, including an open letter published on August 27 that strongly condemned the French government’s actions. In that letter, the TON Society characterized Durov’s arrest as “a direct assault on a basic human right — the freedom of expression of everyone.” The group had also called upon international bodies including the United Nations, Council of Europe, OSCE, and European Union to intervene.
Following Durov’s detention, many cryptocurrency industry figures voiced concerns about the implications for digital privacy and decentralized technologies, particularly regarding potential government censorship and regulatory overreach targeting internet platforms.
French President Emmanuel Macron has consistently denied political motivations behind Durov’s arrest, claiming France remains committed to free speech principles. In subsequent press appearances, Macron also rejected allegations that he had personally invited Durov to France, as criticism mounted from digital rights advocates.
The incident prompted other digital platform executives to take precautionary measures. Chris Pavlovski, CEO of free-speech video platform Rumble, announced his own departure from Europe shortly after Durov’s detention, claiming the French government had threatened his platform and condemning what he described as a crackdown on free expression.
The TON cryptocurrency, which is linked to the Telegram ecosystem, experienced significant price movement following news of Durov’s release and departure from France.
