Theta EdgeCloud has become an official partner of Olympique de Marseille, a top French football club. The club has joined Theta’s enterprise validator program. This collaboration is designed to boost Marseille’s digital growth by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain, with the goal of improving team performance, fan experience, and data security.
As part of the partnership, Olympique de Marseille has introduced an AI-powered smart mascot. The mascot uses Theta EdgeCloud’s decentralized GPU (graphics processing unit) infrastructure to provide a virtual fan assistant. This tool answers questions about lineups, tickets, team stats, stadium directions, and club news in a conversational way. The feature will be available on the club’s official website and mobile app, and is the first AI-driven fan platform for Ligue 1 McDonald’s.
The smart mascot is trained on both club and league data. It can answer questions like “What’s the starting lineup for tonight’s match?” or “How do I get to Orange Vélodrome?” by providing fast and accurate responses. It uses Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, which keeps its answers up to date by drawing on real-time match information and statistics. According to Alessandro Antonello, General Manager of Olympique de Marseille: “This partnership with Theta Edgecloud marks a new milestone in our ambition to make OM a more modern, connected, and future-facing club.”
The club’s new role as a Theta Enterprise Validator puts it among other global businesses such as Google, Samsung, and Sony. As a validator, Olympique de Marseille will help confirm transactions and maintain the security of Theta’s network. Validators stake THETA tokens to safeguard the network and participate in governance. The club’s validator address is available for public viewing on the Theta blockchain explorer.
Future plans for the AI mascot include ticketing support, customer service, in-stadium location assistance, fantasy football tools, and predictive match analytics. The platform runs on a distributed network of more than 30,000 GPU nodes, providing over 80 petaFLOPs of computing capacity, which helps handle large numbers of fan interactions on game days.
Founded in 1899, Olympique de Marseille is known for its record of 11 league titles and its 1993 Champions League win. The club has a digital following of more than 25 million fans and plays at the Orange Vélodrome stadium, which can seat 67,000 people. The AI mascot is scheduled for release at the beginning of the 2025/2026 Ligue 1 season, with more features planned for later. For more details, see the original press release (French).
