- Tesla is recruiting a manufacturing engineer to support concept development and production of its next-generation Roadster at its Fremont, California, facility.
- The new Roadster remains in early development, with plans to transition from small-scale prototypes to full production, and processes to be validated and optimized throughout.
- According to the job posting, the successful candidate will oversee manufacturing systems for new battery technology, from concept through equipment launch and handover.
- The Roadster is positioned as an exclusive, high-performance vehicle, with prior announcements of a starting price of $200,000 and acceleration aims of under one second from 0-60 mph.
- Tesla does not expect significant financial impact from the Roadster, seeing it as a niche product compared to higher-volume models, with CEO Elon Musk calling it “the cherry on the icing on the cake.”
Tesla has posted a new job opening for a Manufacturing Engineer in Fremont, California, specifically focused on the upcoming Roadster model. The company is seeking expertise to help develop the new vehicle from early concept through to mass production.
The position will guide manufacturing systems for the Roadster’s new battery and product architecture. The successful applicant will take the project from initial design through to equipment launch, optimization, and eventual transfer to local operations. Compensation is listed between $80,000 and $174,000 per year, in addition to cash and stock awards.
Tesla confirmed in the posting that the Roadster’s architecture is still in its early stages. The company has not launched a brand-new vehicle since the start of Cybertruck deliveries in late 2023. The only other job listings referencing Roadster involve this engineering role.
The Roadster, a tribute to Tesla’s original 2008–2012 electric sports car, was first revealed in 2017. Although several delivery dates have been suggested by CEO Elon Musk, these have been postponed. Earlier this month, Tesla’s chief designer said plans are in place for a Roadster demo within the year.
Financially, the company does not anticipate the Roadster will have a major effect on its earnings. Musk emphasized the limited impact, stating in May 2023, “It’s not even the icing on the cake but the cherry on the icing on the cake.” The projected starting price for the Roadster is $200,000, higher than the $79,990 starting price of the Cybertruck. Tesla has collaborated with SpaceX to target acceleration of under one second from 0 to 60 mph—a figure lower than its initial projection of 1.9 seconds.
