Strategy, a leading Bitcoin treasury company co-founded by Michael Saylor, signaled plans for another Bitcoin purchase as its existing crypto reserves topped $71 billion. On July 14, the company announced it had acquired 4,225 Bitcoin for $472.5 million, bringing total holdings to 601,550 Bitcoin.
At current valuation, Strategy’s Bitcoin portfolio is worth more than $71.4 billion. Data from SaylorTracker shows the company’s Bitcoin investment has gained approximately 66.5%, resulting in $28.5 billion in unrealized gains.
Bitcoin treasury companies like Strategy have remained key sources of demand in the digital asset market. These purchases, alongside the activity of exchange-traded funds (ETFs), institutional investors, and centralized exchanges, support the ongoing adoption trend.
The stock price of Strategy jumped 21.52% over the last month, leading to a market valuation surpassing $118 billion. This growth followed a period where the global cryptocurrency market cap exceeded the $4 trillion mark in July and Bitcoin set a new all-time high.
In December 2024, Strategy joined the Nasdaq 100 index as institutional interest in its stock grew. Some investment firms prefer exposure to Bitcoin through company shares instead of holding the assets directly due to fund restrictions. Macro economist Lyn Alden explained, “There are stock funds where the portfolio manager can only buy stocks. He or she cannot buy bonds, ETFs, or commodities.” This gives funds access to crypto exposure through traditional stock holdings.
Vanguard, one of the largest asset managers, has traditionally avoided holding Bitcoin directly. However, it now owns 20 million shares of Strategy, representing 8% of the company’s outstanding shares. This indirect investment signals Bitcoin’s deeper integration into conventional financial markets.
