Solana Validators Vote on Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade for Speed Boost

Solana Proposes Alpenglow Upgrade: Faster Finality and Enhanced Security Await Validator Vote

  • Solana developers have put forward the Alpenglow consensus upgrade, now open to validator voting.
  • So far, just over 10% of validators have voted, with more than 88% still undecided.
  • If approved, the change would replace existing Proof-of-History and TowerBFT systems with new components called Votor and Rotor.
  • Votor aims to cut transaction finalization time from over 12 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds.
  • The update introduces a “20+20” resilience model to improve security, even if up to 40% of validators are offline or adversarial.

Solana developers are advancing the Alpenglow proposal for a major consensus system upgrade, which has entered the validator voting phase as of Thursday morning in Europe. The update would replace the current Proof-of-History and TowerBFT mechanisms with a new design focused on two new elements named Votor and Rotor.

Data from a tracking site shows that a little over 10% of validators have supported the proposal so far, leaving more than 88% of eligible parties yet to make their choice. Alpenglow aims to improve speed and network security for all participants.

Proof-of-History, Solana’s current system, time-stamps transactions for accurate ordering. TowerBFT, the network’s voting process, helps validators agree on the next block and resist attacks. The suggested replacement, Votor, is designed to reduce transaction finalization times sharply — from more than 12 seconds to around 150 milliseconds. This would make transaction confirmations almost instant for users.

The other new element, Rotor, will be introduced later and is intended to boost network efficiency by cutting down the number of times data must be transferred between validators. This upgrade could strengthen support for resource-heavy projects such as DeFi or gaming applications.

According to the proposal, Alpenglow also offers a “20+20” resilience feature. This model keeps the blockchain operational even if 20% of validators behave maliciously and another 20% go offline at the same time.

Developers say these changes are designed to create faster speeds and greater fairness for validators, while also improving overall security on the Solana network.
