- Solana has pulled its controversial “America is Back” advertisement after significant backlash from the crypto community.
- The ad contained politically charged content including a line about “inventing technologies, not gender” that many criticized as divisive and contradictory to crypto’s inclusive principles.
- Even Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko distanced himself from the campaign, suggesting the company’s previous marketing efforts were better.
Solana has withdrawn its contentious “America is Back—Time to Accelerate” advertisement following widespread criticism from cryptocurrency industry leaders and community members. The now-deleted video, which featured patriotic themes and political messaging that many viewed as exclusionary, had amassed over 1.4 million views before being removed from social media.
The advertisement, posted Monday before noon Eastern Time, sparked immediate controversy due to its apparent political stance and messaging against gender diversity. One particular scene that drew criticism featured a character in therapy for “rational thinking syndrome” stating: “I want to invent technologies, not gender.”
This content prompted numerous industry figures to condemn the marketing approach. Tyler Bench, CRO of on-chain governance platform Tally.xyz, wrote: “This might be the single most toxic piece of content I have ever consumed. It’s like the Coinbase ads if they were created by an incel who hasn’t left the basement in years.”
Product lead at Base, Anneri van der Merwe, claimed the ad was “Offensive, cringe, and pandering,” adding that “Base is for everyone. Solana co-opted the ‘is for everyone’ phrase last week too. This ad shows there’s still a long way to go in truly embracing that ethos.”
The advertisement’s deletion highlights growing tensions in the cryptocurrency space regarding political messaging. Critics argue the content contradicted foundational industry values of neutrality and global inclusivity that blockchain technology has traditionally championed.
Adam Cochran, partner at Cinneamhain Ventures, opined: “The ‘mind virus’ that’s infected the nation is whatever weird circlejerk is going on in Silicon Valley where people are convinced they were oppressed and that this is cool or edgy.”
Mentor Reka, CEO of DEX protocol Avnu.Fi, said about the marketing approach: “This might be Solana’s least inventive ad ever. They clearly went for attention over EVERYTHING, and well… mission accomplished, I guess.”
Notably, Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko appeared to distance himself from the campaign, suggesting in a social media post that the company’s previous “Maren ad was better,” referencing an earlier, less controversial marketing effort.
While the original video has been deleted from official Solana channels, it has been reposted by several users on X. Some industry observers suggest the advertisement may have been intentional “rage bait” designed to generate buzz through controversy—a marketing tactic that risks alienating substantial portions of the global cryptocurrency community.
At press time, Solana has not issued any official statement regarding the advertisement’s removal, nor has the company responded to requests for comment on the situation.
