  • Singapore‘s NTU, ranked 15th globally, joins Theta Labs’ academic network as EdgeCloud customer.
  • NTU’s Speech Lab secured S$18 million in research funding for AI and language processing projects.
  • Professor Chng’s team specializes in multilingual speech recognition and AI-driven language models.
  • Theta EdgeCloud provides decentralized GPU infrastructure for NTU’s AI research scaling.
  • Partnership aligns with Theta’s 2025 roadmap for hybrid cloud-edge computing platform.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore’s second-highest-ranked institution, has become the latest academic partner to adopt Theta Labs’ EdgeCloud platform for AI research computing. The partnership extends Theta’s academic network, which includes prominent institutions like Seoul National University and Peking University.

Academic Excellence Meets AI Infrastructure

The Speech and Language Laboratory at NTU, under Professor Chng Eng Siong’s direction, will utilize Theta’s distributed computing resources for advanced AI research. NTU, currently ranked 15th in QS World University Rankings 2025, positions this collaboration within a broader strategy to advance speech and language processing technologies.

Research Focus and Achievements

The laboratory’s research portfolio encompasses multiple specialized areas:

  • Multilingual speech recognition systems supporting English, Mandarin, and Singlish
  • Advanced noise reduction and speaker identification technologies
  • Integration of large language models for contextual understanding
  • Deep fake detection and audio event classification systems

Professor Chng states: "We’ve seen Theta Labs success and collaboration with many of the top South Korean and US universities, and we’re excited to use EdgeCloud to scale our research at NTU’s Speech Lab."

Strategic Alignment with Theta’s Expansion

The partnership coincides with Theta Labs’ expansion plans, leading to their June 2025 Beta release of a hybrid cloud-edge computing platform. The network currently operates across 30,000 nodes globally, providing distributed GPU computing power for AI research institutions.

The collaboration demonstrates the increasing adoption of decentralized computing infrastructure in academic research, particularly in resource-intensive fields like AI and machine learning. NTU’s integration into the Theta ecosystem represents a significant step in establishing decentralized GPU computing as a viable alternative to traditional cloud services for academic institutions.
