Romanian authorities seized $7 million from crypto entrepreneur Bogdan Peșchir during an investigation into alleged election fraud financing. The 36-year-old TikTok influencer, known as "bogpr," faces scrutiny over suspected illegal campaign contributions to Romania’s surprise presidential front-runner.
TikTok Campaign Financing Under Investigation
Romanian officials identified payments totaling $381,000 from Peșchir to TikTok accounts promoting Călin Georgescu, a pro-Russian independent candidate who unexpectedly led the first round of presidential voting. The Supreme Council of National Defense documented these transfers occurred between October 24 and November 24, extending beyond legal campaign periods.
The investigation revealed approximately 25,000 TikTok accounts with 8 million followers collectively promoted Georgescu’s campaign. This digital push coincided with Georgescu’s sudden emergence in Romanian politics weeks before the November elections.
Cryptocurrency Connections
Peșchir’s cryptocurrency industry ties include associations with BitXATM, a Romanian crypto ATM company that experienced a theft scandal in 2016. He later became an employee at Globaya LTD, a UK-based crypto firm established by BitXATM’s founder, Gabriel Prodanescu.
The entrepreneur maintains his innocence, stating: "I have income from other sources, completely legal, that are declared and taxed." However, authorities question the disparity between his declared income and lifestyle, including ownership of luxury vehicles.
Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has suspended the second round of voting amid concerns of Russian interference. The Kremlin denied involvement, characterizing the investigation as "unprecedented outburst of anti-Russian hysteria."
Peșchir faces potential legal consequences if investigators prove the campaign payments violated Romanian electoral laws. The case highlights growing concerns about cryptocurrency’s role in political financing and electoral integrity.
