On December 18, 2025, Repsol, a global energy company active in over 90 countries, became a member of the Hedera Council. The aim is to advance adoption of Web3 technologies, focusing on decentralized digital identity (DID) to improve trust, security, and efficiency in its operations.
Repsol, a Fortune Global 500 company serving more than 24 million customers, plans to use Hedera’s distributed Ledger technology for secure, real-time data verification and exchange across its global operations. This will help the company comply with evolving regulations like eIDAS2 and GDPR, reduce administrative tasks, and enhance transparency in areas such as procurement, supplier onboarding, and sustainability reporting.
As a new Council member, Repsol will operate a node on the Hedera network and hold equal voting power with other Council members in governing Hedera’s software and services. The company aims to achieve three specific objectives: standardizing interoperable identity systems for business partners and employees; automating credential exchanges to streamline Know Your Customer (KYC) and Know Your Business (KYB) processes; and delivering verifiable, tamper-proof credentials to prevent fraud and build trust.
“Repsol’s entry to Hedera Council marks a major milestone for Hedera’s enterprise mission. Repsol operates across markets, jurisdictions, and supply networks that demand verifiable trust at scale,” said Tom Sylvester, President of Hedera Council. “Their decision to build foundational digital identity use cases on Hedera underscores a clear reality: the future of multinational operations and complex supply-chain verification demands trusted governance.”
In addition to its governance role, Repsol will explore new DID applications, including issuing sustainable origin certificates, verifying vendor data, and developing DID-based signature tools. These efforts align with Hedera Council’s mission to provide decentralized, secure, and transparent management of the Hedera network. Repsol joins a rotating group of up to 39 leading global organizations contributing to the network’s governance.
