Pavel Durov, founder of Telegram, has returned to Dubai following months of legal entanglement in France. On March 17, Durov posted an update to his Telegram channel confirming his return to Dubai. “It feels great to be home,” he wrote, noting that while legal proceedings continue, he had received permission to leave France.

The announcement validates earlier reports from March 15 that cited anonymous sources claiming French authorities had permitted Durov to depart the country. The tech executive had been arrested in Paris on August 24 during an investigation focusing on Telegram’s alleged role in enabling illegal activities.

In his first public statement since returning home, Durov thanked the French investigative judges for permitting his travel and acknowledged his legal team’s efforts. “When it comes to moderation, cooperation, and fighting crime, for years, Telegram not only met but exceeded its legal obligations,” he stated in his message.

The founder also expressed appreciation for his supporters worldwide, emphasizing the resilience of the Telegram community: “There is nothing our billion-strong community can’t overcome.”

Durov’s release sparked significant market movement for Toncoin, the native cryptocurrency of The Open Network (TON), which maintains strong associations with Telegram. Following news of his freedom, Toncoin surged from $2.93 to $3.46 on March 15, eventually reaching a seven-day peak of $3.59 on March 17. Current trading data from CoinGecko shows the asset trading at $3.41.

TON Society, a grassroots organization supporting the TON blockchain ecosystem, celebrated Durov’s release. The group had previously advocated for the executive through an open letter to French authorities, praising his commitment to free speech and transparency.

The Telegram platform continues to serve as a major communications hub for cryptocurrency communities, with its user base reportedly exceeding one billion globally, according to Durov’s statement.
