- OpenAI plans to relax restrictions in ChatGPT, allowing adult users to access erotic content after verifying their age.
- Age verification measures are set to roll out widely in December, according to CEO Sam Altman.
- The company faces scrutiny and a lawsuit following a U.S. teenager’s death linked to ChatGPT interactions.
- Recent safety features were introduced, letting parents link with teens’ accounts and monitor sensitive chat topics.
- The move reflects a broader industry trend, with Meta Platforms also updating content filters for minors on Instagram and its AI tools.
OpenAI announced it will ease some limitations on ChatGPT to permit a broader range of conversations, including erotic content for verified adult users. The change was shared by CEO Sam Altman on Tuesday as part of a plan to launch expanded age verification by December.
The decision follows statements from Altman indicating that ChatGPT will become more “human-like” in future updates, but only if users enable this feature. “We made ChatGPT pretty restrictive to make sure we were being careful with mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable to many users who had no mental health problems, but given the seriousness of the issue, we wanted to get this right,” Altman said in a post on X.
This policy shift comes after OpenAI faced criticism for gaps in ChatGPT’s mental health safeguards. A lawsuit has been filed by the parents of a U.S. teenager who took his own life after months of discussions with ChatGPT. The suit alleges ChatGPT failed to intervene and provided assistance in planning self-harm.
In response, OpenAI recently released new safety features. These allow teenagers’ ChatGPT accounts to be connected with their parents, who can then review sensitive conversations and set designated quiet hours on the platform.
The addition of erotica in ChatGPT follows recent trends in Artificial Intelligence chat services. For example, Elon Musk’s xAI introduced features allowing bots to offer “sexy” and “unhinged” modes. Similarly, Meta Platforms announced new content controls intended to limit what minors can see on Instagram and its AI, using filters based on the Motion Picture Association’s PG-13 rating. These updates are expected to reach users in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Canada by the end of the year.
