OpenAI Adds Real-Time Video Analysis to ChatGPT, Intensifying AI Competition with Google and Meta
OpenAI integrated live video analysis capabilities into ChatGPT’s premium tiers on Thursday, marking a significant advancement in AI-human interaction and competing directly with recent releases from Google’s Gemini 2.0 and Meta’s visual AI assistant.
Premium Access and Features
The new functionality, dubbed “Advanced Voice Mode with vision,” requires a subscription to ChatGPT Plus ($20 monthly) or ChatGPT Pro ($200 monthly). OpenAI’s Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil announced the feature as part of the company’s “12 Days of OpenAI” campaign, which has already introduced several updates including the o1 model and reinforced fine-tuning capabilities.
Users can now:
- Analyze real-time video through phone cameras
- Share screens for interactive assistance
- Receive immediate feedback on visual inputs
- Engage in natural conversational interactions
Market Competition Intensifies
Google’s response came through Project Astra, currently in limited testing on Android devices. The system offers multilingual support and integrates with Google’s existing services, maintaining conversation context for up to 10 minutes.
Meta’s approach differs through Project Orion, which combines AI capabilities with augmented reality glasses. The system utilizes frame-mounted cameras for environmental interaction, positioning Meta uniquely in the wearable AI space.
The implementation faced delays after concerns emerged regarding voice replication technology, specifically related to unauthorized use of celebrity voices. This setback allowed competitors to narrow the gap in video-capable AI assistants.
For current ChatGPT Plus subscribers, accessing the video feature requires activating the voice icon beside the chat bar and selecting the video option. Screen sharing functionality is available through the three-dot menu. Enterprise and educational users can expect access in January 2024, though European Union availability remains pending regulatory considerations.
