On Monday, OpenAI said it acquired healthcare startup Torch as part of a broader push into healthcare services. The company did not disclose the deal value and said Torch co-founders Ilya Abyzov and Eugene Huang will join OpenAI.
Ilya Abyzov described Torch as a unified medical memory for AI. “We designed Torch to be a unified medical memory for AI, bringing every bit of data about you from hospitals, labs, wearables, and consumer testing companies into one place,” he wrote.
Last week, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health to combine user health information with ChatGPT’s intelligence and provide tailored responses. The company said the product was developed in close collaboration with more than 260 physicians over two years to deliver clear and useful health information.
On Sunday, rival Anthropic introduced Claude for Healthcare, a set of HIPAA-ready tools and resources for healthcare providers, payers, and consumers. Anthropic framed the offering as a way to help startups build healthcare products and enable enterprises to integrate AI into operations.
Other technology companies already have active healthcare programs. Nvidia offers high-performance computing and the Clara platform for biomedical research and medical imaging. Google has stepped up work through Google Health and Google DeepMind, including an AI co-scientist tool unveiled last year.
Retail sentiment on investor forums showed bullish interest in OpenAI amid normal message volume. Observers noted the acquisition and new product launches as signs of increasing competition in AI-driven healthcare.
