Odysee Announces Shift to Arweave, Aiming for Full Decentralization

Media platform Odysee plans a decentralized future with Arweave technology.

  • Odysee is partnering with Arweave for decentralized data storage.
  • The move aims to make Odysee more creator-centric and censorship-resistant.
  • A Decentralised Media Ecosystem (DME) is being developed alongside Odysee.
  • Users can expect easier content creation and community management.
  • The shift is intended to make media applications more resilient and user-focused.

Odysee, a media sharing platform known for its parallels to early YouTube, has announced a major shift in its technological and strategic direction.

The company is teaming up with Arweave, a Layer 1 blockchain specializing in data storage, to rebuild Odysee as a fully decentralized platform. This move aims to align Odysee more closely with its original goals of decentralization, user autonomy, and censorship resistance.

Reflecting on Past and Present

Julian Chandra, Founder & Chief Executive Officer of Odysee, explained that the platform has strayed from its original vision.

Initially, Odysee aimed to be a decentralized media sharing platform, providing users with complete autonomy and freedom from censorship.

Instead, the need to deliver timely features led Odysee away from these foundational objectives.

Despite the deviations, Odysee has achieved significant milestones. The platform became the largest Web 3 media platform in the world – according to Julian Chandra – serving as an alternative to YouTube for niche creators.

Yet, Chandra emphasized that the original mission was always more ambitious than merely becoming an alternative platform.

The Road to Arweave

In early 2023, Odysee’s former parent company identified a new parent company that introduced them to Arweave. (Learn what is Arweave).

This technology seemed like a perfect match for Odysee’s needs, especially considering the high costs associated with media hosting and delivery. Arweave’s data storage capabilities appeared to be exactly what Odysee required to achieve its original goals.

According to ArDrive,

Arweave is a decentralized network that allows anyone to store data permanently and securely. It is designed to be censorship-resistant and allows users to upload any size of file. Arweave is backed by a novel endowment model that provides perpetual funding for storage costs. This means that users only need to pay a one-time fee to store data permanently on Arweave.

Odysee has since been working on building new applications on Arweave, including a reimagined version of Odysee itself.

The new platform promises to retain its familiar look and feel while incorporating more creator-centric features and full decentralization.

Users might not notice the decentralization on the surface, but this component is crucial for making Odysee truly special and unstoppable.

Building a Decentralised Media Ecosystem (DME)

Odysee is also developing a Decentralized Media Ecosystem (DME) alongside its platform. The DME aims to create an open network where various media applications can thrive.

This ecosystem would leverage the same Arweave technology, focusing on privacy, customization, and censorship resistance.

The DME offers several key advantages:

  1. Multiple Media Applications: Users can create platforms similar to Odysee, Reddit, or other popular media applications. These would be faster to launch and inherently privacy-focused.
  2. Unified Content: Content within the DME can be surfaced across all applications, making it accessible and unrestricted.
  3. Customizable Platforms: Users can create their own media applications, blogs, or forums using open standards available within the DME and Arweave.
  4. Data Portability: Creators don’t need to build their communities across multiple platforms. Their data, including content, followers, and views, will be consistent across the DME.
  5. Resilience: The DME eliminates single points of failure. If one platform goes down, others can quickly take its place, complete with all existing data.
  6. Open Content Distribution: The DME is not driven by advertisers. Content is open for distribution across any application within the ecosystem, provided it adheres to the creator’s distribution terms.

Conclusion

Odysee’s new direction marks a clear shift from building platforms to developing protocols.

This change aims to counter the current trend of centralized, corporate-controlled internet. By partnering with Arweave and focusing on decentralization, Odysee hopes to recapture the magic of the old internet.

The team at Odysee is excited about the future and expresses deep gratitude to its loyal user base for their continued support.

Julian Chandra and the Odysee team are committed to making this vision a reality, believing that the new approach will lead to a more open, user-friendly, and resilient internet.

As they embark on this journey, they remain grateful for the community’s trust and support, which they consider their greatest asset.
