Mystery Shrouds Vitalik Buterin’s Control Over Ethereum Foundation

  • Ethereum Foundation lacks transparency on Vitalik Buterin‘s voting power, despite repeated inquiries from historian Laura Shin.
  • Conflicting statements suggest Buterin might control three votes on the four-member board, giving him potential veto power.
  • Recent foundation communications emphasize collective governance while avoiding direct answers about its voting structure.

Renowned blockchain historian and author Laura Shin continues to seek clarity about Vitalik Buterin’s control over the Ethereum Foundation and its $400 million treasury. Despite multiple inquiries, most recently yesterday, no one has provided a definitive answer on whether Buterin holds three supervotes or shares equal voting power with the other board members.

This question affects millions of Ethereum token holders worldwide, including hundreds of thousands of wallets actively transacting daily on the network. The foundation’s board currently consists of four directors: Vitalik Buterin, Aya Miyaguchi, Hsiao-Wei Wang, and Patrick Storchenegger, with Buterin being the only founding member remaining.

While Buterin is widely recognized as the project’s leader, the foundation consistently minimizes his authority in communications. Yesterday, the organization released joint statements from incoming "co-executive directors" about their focus areas and vision implementation. Buterin and Miyaguchi co-authored a new vision statement, while all four board members jointly announced executive personnel changes, conveying an impression of shared leadership.

The Mystery of Buterin’s Voting Power

Despite numerous attempts by Shin to clarify the voting structure, the foundation has maintained what one observer called "radio silence" on the matter. Shin, author of "The Cryptopians" which chronicles Ethereum’s creation, has been seeking this information for years.

In 2020, board member Storchenegger reportedly told Shin that Buterin held three votes, effectively giving him veto power over any board decision. However, Buterin himself has made contradictory statements, sometimes claiming to possess just a single vote.

Growing Demands for Transparency

Community members have rallied behind Shin’s question, emphasizing its importance for transparency. "I hope you get an honest response," wrote one supporter, while another commented, "I hope u get an answer to this question, important for transparency."

The foundation’s reluctance to clarify its governance structure stands in contrast to its public messaging about community-focused oversight. Protos has contacted the Ethereum Foundation for comment and will update if they receive a response.

Despite managing approximately $400 million in assets according to ArkM data and influencing a blockchain used by millions, the foundation continues to avoid answering this fundamental governance question that could reveal whether Ethereum is truly decentralized at its institutional core.
