- Mountain City residents met to discuss a proposed Bitcoin mining facility by Clean Spark.
- The company claims the project will bring jobs and economic benefits, but locals worry about environmental impacts and lack of transparency.
- Over 1,000 signatures have been gathered against the proposal ahead of a local government meeting.
Community members in Mountain City, Tennessee, gathered on Monday evening to learn about a potential Bitcoin mining operation proposed by the Nevada-based company Clean Spark. The meeting was called after residents received notice that a large-scale cryptocurrency mining facility could be coming to their area.
Clean Spark says the new project would create local jobs and spur economic growth in Mountain City. However, some community members are raising concerns about the potential environmental effects and how the information was shared with the public.
“We have, like, less than a week ago, we got this notice,” said Amelia Lopez Saltarelli, a community organizer. “We’ve had over a thousand petition signatures so far against this. And this community is upset and in an uproar, frankly. Because we feel like this has been snuck in from somebody outside.”
Local government officials plan to discuss the proposed facility at the Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting scheduled for Tuesday night. Residents are expected to voice their opinions and ask questions during the session.
Bitcoin mining is the process of using powerful computers to solve complex mathematical puzzles, which helps verify cryptocurrency transactions on a blockchain. This process requires significant amounts of electricity, which has led to environmental concerns in many communities considering such operations.
The proposal from Clean Spark comes as debate continues nationwide over the balance between economic opportunities and potential environmental impacts tied to cryptocurrency mining.
Additional details about the project, including its size and exact location, have not yet been publicly released.
