Michigan State University Adopts Theta’s EdgeCloud for AI Research

Michigan State University has selected Theta’s EdgeCloud platform to power its Artificial Intelligence research initiatives, marking the second major US academic institution to adopt the decentralized computing solution. The partnership focuses on advancing AI development, Cybersecurity, and distributed systems research.

Academic Excellence Meets Decentralized Computing

The university’s Secure and Intelligent Things (SEIT) Lab, under the direction of Associate Professor Qiben Yan, will utilize Theta’s distributed GPU infrastructure for multiple research applications. Professor Yan’s expertise spans:

  • IoT security protocols
  • AI privacy mechanisms
  • Blockchain resilience testing
  • Cybersecurity frameworks

The lab’s recent accomplishments include receiving National Science Foundation funding for research on AI-powered speech recognition systems and developing secure smart contract frameworks.

Infrastructure Expansion and Technical Capabilities

EdgeCloud’s architecture provides several technical advantages:

  • Distributed GPU processing across multiple geographic locations
  • Reduced resource allocation time compared to traditional cloud services
  • Integration with global edge computing nodes
  • Specialized support for AI model training and deployment

"Theta has achieved significant customer traction in Asia with some of the top South Korean universities like KAIST and Seoul National," Professor Yan stated, highlighting the platform’s international adoption. He added that EdgeCloud would support the lab’s objective of "scaling various AI projects that require high-performance computing cost efficiently."

The collaboration strengthens Theta’s presence in academic research, joining existing partnerships with institutions across the United States, China, and South Korea. This expansion supports research applications in media processing, healthcare analytics, bioinformatics, and financial technology systems.
