- White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks claims Meta’s Llama 4 release has pushed the United States into the lead in global AI competition.
- Meta introduced two new Llama 4 models—Scout and Maverick—claiming they outperform rival AI systems across standard benchmarks.
- Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg predicted in July 2024 that Llama models would become “the most advanced in the industry” by 2025.
David Sacks, the White House AI and crypto czar, has declared that Meta’s latest Artificial Intelligence model release has propelled the United States to the forefront of the global AI competition. Following the introduction of Llama 4 on April 5, Sacks said on X, “For the US to win the AI race, we have to win in open source too, and Llama 4 puts us back in the lead.”
Sacks, who assumed his role after President Trump’s January inauguration, has consistently voiced concerns about the international AI competition. Barely a week into his position, he stated he was “confident in the US, but we can’t be complacent.” His latest remarks highlight the perceived significance of Meta’s new AI developments in the context of US-China technological rivalry.
Meta Unveils “Best in Class” Multimodal AI Models
The social media giant announced two fourth-generation Llama models: Scout and Maverick. Meta described them as their “most advanced models yet and the best in their class for multimodality.” According to the company, Llama 4 Scout features 17 billion active parameters with 16 experts and reportedly outperforms competing models including Gemma 3, Gemini 2.0 Flash-lite, and Mistral 3.1 on standard benchmarks.
The more powerful Llama 4 Maverick also has 17 billion active parameters but incorporates 128 experts. Meta claims this model surpasses GPT-4o and Gemini 2.0 Flash across numerous accepted benchmarks. The company added that Maverick performs comparably to DeepSeek v3 on reasoning and coding tasks despite using only half the active parameters.
Rapid Progress Since First Llama Release
Meta’s AI ambitions appear to be advancing on schedule. In July 2024, Mark Zuckerberg predicted that by 2025, Llama models would become “the most advanced in the industry.” The company has made remarkable progress since releasing the limited version of Llama 1 in February 2023, just over two years ago.
The initial Llama release generated substantial interest, with Meta reporting they were “blown away” by receiving over 100,000 access requests. The rapid development of increasingly sophisticated models demonstrates Meta’s commitment to competing at the highest levels of AI development, potentially strengthening America’s position in the global AI race as highlighted by Sacks.
