Magic Eden Acquires Slingshot, Expands Beyond NFTs into Token Trading

Magic Eden Acquires Slingshot Finance to Enter Token and Meme Coin Trading Across Multiple Blockchains

  • Magic Eden is acquiring Slingshot Finance to expand beyond NFTs into token and meme coin trading
  • The acquisition enables trading across multiple blockchains and will soon include support for Bitcoin-based Runes
  • Slingshot serves nearly one million users with trading capabilities across 10+ blockchain networks

Magic Eden announced Wednesday it will acquire crypto trading platform Slingshot Finance, marking a strategic pivot from solely NFT marketplace operations to broader cryptocurrency trading across multiple blockchains. After building anticipation through teaser announcements on social media, Magic Eden revealed its expansion plans to incorporate fungible token and meme coin trading into its service offerings.

Strategic Expansion Beyond NFTs

The acquisition positions Magic Eden to compete directly with traditional cryptocurrency exchanges by integrating Slingshot’s mobile-first trading infrastructure. “This acquisition is a major step forward in advancing the Magic Eden vision, which is to provide users worldwide with a seamless and safe way to buy and sell crypto and digital assets across all chains,” said Jack Lu, Magic Eden’s co-founder and CEO in the company’s press release.

Slingshot Finance has developed a reputation for its user-friendly interface that allows seamless trading across more than 10 blockchain networks without requiring manual asset bridging. The platform currently offers real-time listings for over 5 million tokens and has attracted nearly one million users since its launch.

Clinton Bembry, Slingshot’s co-founder and CEO, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating, “Slingshot is pioneering the most comprehensive trading infrastructure in the industry, and alongside Magic Eden, we are raising the bar higher.”

Competitive Positioning and Future Developments

The strategic move helps Magic Eden better compete with key rival Tensor, a Solana NFT marketplace that already operates its own crypto trading app called Vector. According to a company spokesperson, Slingshot will maintain its distinct branding rather than adopting Magic Eden’s identity.

In the coming weeks, Slingshot is expected to add support for Runes (Bitcoin-based meme coins), further expanding its cross-chain capabilities. Lu told Decrypt that Slingshot will incorporate “gamified experiences, AI integrations, [and] expansion to chains unsupported by other platforms like Hype, XRP, and native BTC.”

The acquisition reflects an industry trend toward decentralized trading options as digital assets continue to enter mainstream conversations. By combining NFT marketplace functionality with comprehensive token trading capabilities, Magic Eden aims to create a full-scale hub for cryptocurrency activity under a single platform umbrella.
