Hedera Projects Migrate to Hiero, Require SDK Namespace Updates

Hedera Projects Migrate to Hiero Platform Under Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust, Requiring Namespace Updates for Developers

  • Hedera projects have moved to the Hiero platform under the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust as of September 2024.
  • This migration shifts all project namespaces from “hashgraph” to “hiero” or “hiero-Ledger”, requiring updates for software developers.
  • The move aims to improve transparency, encourage community participation, and foster open-source growth.
  • Developers must update SDK dependencies for Java, JavaScript, and Rust to the new namespace within clear migration periods.
  • Support is available via Discord and GitHub Discussions to help users with the transition.

Hedera projects transitioned to the Hiero open-source platform under the Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust in September 2024. The migration requires all technical references, dependencies, and SDK imports to change from the “hashgraph” namespace to “hiero” or “hiero-ledger.” Hedera reports that this move is meant to support greater transparency and collaboration within the developer community.

According to an official announcement, Hiero will now operate with a vendor-neutral, community-led framework. The platform inherits existing Hedera technology and invites open-source governance. The Linux Foundation’s LF Decentralized Trust will host Hiero as part of its mission to boost ongoing development and innovation.

Developers are advised to update their project dependencies to match the new namespaces. The Java SDK will switch to “hiero” starting with version 2.80.0. Hiero notes that after this update, all new features and updates will only appear in the new namespace, while older versions in the “hashgraph” namespace will remain accessible but unsupported. Detailed migration instructions for Java can be found in the official guidelines.

For JavaScript and Rust, a dual publishing approach will allow updates under both old and new namespaces for about six months. The JavaScript SDK will shift completely to “@hiero-ledger” after version 2.83.0, while Rust will transition solely to “hiero” after version 0.51.0. During the transition, updates will be available under both namespaces to ease the migration process. Developers can access migration instructions for JavaScript here and for Rust here.

Hedera describes this namespace change as vital to maintaining the sustainability and open governance of Hiero. The organization urges developers to update their dependencies promptly for a smooth experience. “This namespace migration is essential for the long-term sustainability and community-centric governance of Hiero,” according to the official statement.
