- Huione Group head Li Xiong was reportedly arrested in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on the evening of January 28.
- His apprehension follows recent US Treasury sanctions citing his group’s role in laundering over $4 billion from cyber heists.
- Conflicting reports emerged, suggesting he may have been quickly released, while a second, unidentified figure remains in custody.
- Local reports indicate his arrest triggered a mass evacuation from a connected scam compound in the area.
Authorities in Cambodia reportedly arrested Li Xiong, the head of the sanctioned Huione Group, in Phnom Penh around 6 p.m. local time on January 28. This is according to local reporting and photos showing the man known as “Boss Xi” being led away.
A second man, believed to be a scam compound figure from Myanmar, was arrested alongside him. However, unconfirmed rumors on Telegram channels later suggested a potential release for Boss Xi.
Consequently, his arrest appears to have caused immediate upheaval within his network. A video circulating online seemingly shows a mass evacuation from the Huione-linked “Zone 8” scam compound.
The US Treasury sanctioned the Huione Group in October for laundering illicit proceeds. Elliptic estimates its marketplace processed over $27 billion before shutting down last year. This crackdown follows Cambodia’s recent arrest and extradition of another group leader, Chen Zhi, to China.
