- Grayscale now allows eligible investors to swap crypto directly for shares of 10 select funds via in-kind transfers, bypassing the need to sell for cash first.
- Minimum investment thresholds range from approximately $80,300 for Solana to over $364,800 for the Bitcoin Mini Trust, with transactions processed through authorized participants.
- Steve Vanourny, Grayscale’s Head of Index, cited growing Cybersecurity threats from self-custody and DeFi exploits as a key driver for offering regulated custody through in-kind investing.
Grayscale announced Wednesday that eligible investors can now swap their crypto directly for shares of 10 select funds, citing growing cybersecurity threats as a key reason to hold digital assets through regulated products. Until now, investors typically had to sell crypto for cash before buying into a Grayscale fund, but the new in-kind transfer lets them hand over coins directly and receive fund shares in return.
“As digital assets mature, investors are seeking more secure and efficient ways to manage their crypto holdings,” said Steve Vanourny, Grayscale’s Head of Index. “In-kind investing bridges direct crypto ownership and traditional portfolio management,” Vanourny added.
The option covers products including the Grayscale Bitcoin Mini Trust ETF (BTC), Ethereum Staking Mini ETF (ETH), Solana Staking ETF (GSOL), XRP Trust ETF (GXRP), Hyperliquid Staking ETF (HYPG), and ZCash ETF (ZCSH). Investors must go through an authorized participant, one of the large trading firms that create and redeem ETF shares.
Bitcoin was testing the $84,000 level in midday trade, up more than 2% over the past 24 hours. Retail sentiment around BTC remained in the bearish zone, while chatter stayed at low levels over the past day.
The move follows Grayscale’s September launch of its Digital Assets Next Gen model, a Bitcoin-free portfolio for advisors built from several of the same funds now open to in-kind transfers. The idea is not entirely new, as Grayscale previously offered Bitcoin-for-share exchanges through private placements for the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust before it converted to an ETF, according to the trust’s annual filing.
