Google is accelerating the AI infrastructure race by preparing to back a multibillion-dollar data center for Anthropic in Texas, according to reports on Friday. The project, operated by Nexus Data Centers, could exceed $5 billion with Google expected to provide construction loans.
Construction is already underway for the 2,800-acre campus, supported by early-stage debt from Eagle Point. The site is slated to deliver around 500 megawatts of capacity by late 2026, with potential expansion to a massive 7.7 gigawatts.
However, Anthropic faced significant political headwinds last week. On Thursday, a US federal judge temporarily blocked the Pentagon from labeling the company a national security risk.
Judge Rita Lin granted a preliminary injunction, pausing a directive that sought to halt federal use of Anthropic’s AI. She described the government’s actions as “arbitrary” and warned against branding a US company as a threat without clear legal basis.
Consequently, the ruling came in a lawsuit filed by Anthropic, which argued that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth overstepped his authority. The dispute followed a breakdown in negotiations over the military use of its AI for purposes like lethal autonomous weapons.
Meanwhile, US military units reportedly used Anthropic‘s Claude AI model during a major airstrike on Iran. This use occurred even after the ban order by former President Donald Trump.
