Gitcoin Offers Bounties For ENS Integration Into Dapps

The incentive-based software development community has partnered with the Ethereum address-naming provider.

According to an August 9 announcement, the team behind Gitcoin, which is a community that incentivizes collaboration in open-source software development, is pushing for Ethereum Name Service (ENS) integration into Dapps. To accomplish this, Gitcoin is funding bounties to encourage Dapp developers to make their software compatible with ENS names. Whenever an “issue” (like ENS compatibility) is completed and reviewed, the developer who worked on it is paid a bounty.

Dean Eigenmann, a dispute resolution researcher and developer for the ENS, explained the process for integrating ENS into Dapp infrastructure. He said the first step would be to resolve ENS names, which is a process that would allow the application to understand them.

This name resolution is important because users may update their ENS names, but if the Dapp understands them, it would still be able to resolve the new names – much like a browser automatically redirects people to a different IP address if the website in question has switched servers.

Eigenmann said the second step would be to ensure that the Dapp displays ENS names wherever addresses are usually shown. However, if a user entered their hash address rather than an ENS name into the system, the application would need to reverse resolve it to display the “canonical” name (or human-readable ENS name) when available.

ENS integration has accounted for much traffic along the newswires recently. MetaMask’s August 8 update, version 4.9.0, features compatibility with .eth domains to potentially reduce users’ exposure to “DNS related hacking and phishing.” The ENS itself also announced its partnership with Minds + Machines Group Limited, a Domain Name System registry operator, to allow individuals to associate their hash identifiers with the top-level domain .luxe, enabling names to resolve over the internet the way email and web traffic typically do.
