- Georgia’s Department of Revenue has started sending surplus tax refunds, with over $1 billion being distributed statewide.
- Payments range from $250 for single filers to $500 for married couples filing jointly, as outlined by HB 1000.
- Eligibility requires filing both 2024 and 2025 state tax returns and having no outstanding debt with the Department of Revenue.
- Residents can check their eligibility and payment status through the official Georgia Tax Center portal.
Georgia’s state government is now distributing over $1 billion in surplus tax refunds to residents, following the enactment of HB 1000 in March 2026. Payments of up to $500 for married couples began in early May, marking the fourth such program under Governor Brian Kemp.
The state confirmed the rollout, issuing surplus tax refund checks under HB 1000. Governor Kemp stated, “Hardworking Georgians know best how to spend their money, not the government.”
Eligibility is contingent on filing Georgia income tax returns for both 2024 and 2025. Consequently, filers must also have a clean record with the Department of Revenue, carrying no outstanding state debts.
Residents can track their payment status using the state’s online portal at dor.georgia.gov/georgia-surplus-tax-refund. The Georgia Tax Center updates refund information nightly for taxpayer convenience.
