Ewha Womans University in Seoul has partnered with Theta Labs to use Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid and Theta’s mobile edge network for its artificial intelligence (AI) research. The collaboration aims to support Ewha’s PAI Lab in conducting experiments that require significant computational power.
The PAI Lab, led by Assistant Professor Junhyug Noh, specializes in practical AI technologies such as object detection, segmentation, and learning methods that use less labeled data. The lab will leverage both high-end GPUs and distributed community GPUs made available through Theta’s decentralized platform.
“Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid gives our lab the flexibility to run large-scale experiments across diverse GPU configurations, including both high-end H100s and cost-efficient community GPUs, and we’re also intrigued by Theta’s mobile Android GPUs for object detection, segmentation,” said Professor Noh. “This allows us to pursue rapid model iteration and multi-modal AI research without being constrained by infrastructure limitations.”
Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid combines thousands of community-run NVIDIA GPUs—including the 30, 40, and 50 series—as well as advanced GPU models like A100s and H100s. According to Theta Labs, the network also incorporates amazon Web Services’ AI-specific chips, giving researchers opportunities to conduct experiments with flexibility, speed, and reduced costs.
Theta’s mobile edge network, featuring thousands of Android devices acting as computing nodes, is of particular interest to Ewha’s Department of Artificial Intelligence. The lab plans to study object recognition and other fields using this mobile infrastructure.
“We’re excited to partner with Prof. Noh and the PAI Lab at Ewha Womans University, whose work is pushing the boundaries of real-world AI,” stated Mitch Liu, CEO and Co-Founder of Theta Labs. “Theta EdgeCloud Hybrid and our mobile Android edge network currently in beta was built exactly for this type of research.”
Founded in 1886, Ewha Womans University is the world’s largest women’s university, enrolling over 20,000 students across undergraduate and graduate programs. The university has established a reputation for academic excellence in disciplines including life sciences, engineering, and artificial intelligence. Ewha maintains a global presence through international partnerships and alumnae who have become leaders in various sectors.
