- Developers from Gnosis and Zisk, backed by the Ethereum Foundation, have proposed the “Ethereum Economic Zone” (EEZ) to unify layer-2 rollups.
- The framework aims to enable seamless, synchronous interaction between different rollups and the Ethereum mainnet in a single transaction, reducing fragmentation.
- The proposal comes amid debate over Ethereum’s rollup-centric scaling model, which has split nearly $40 billion in value across more than 20 active layer-2 networks.
- An “EEZ Alliance” will coordinate standards, with technical details and benchmarks expected in the coming weeks.
A coalition of developers from Gnosis and Zisk, with support from the Ethereum Foundation, has proposed a new framework called the “Ethereum Economic Zone” to unify the network’s fragmented layer-2 ecosystem. This initiative, announced recently, seeks to allow rollups to interact seamlessly with each other and the mainnet within a single transaction.
Consequently, the EEZ framework targets a core trade-off in Ethereum’s scaling strategy, where improved throughput has come at the cost of splintered liquidity and user activity. If implemented, it would let applications share infrastructure across rollups while settling back to Ethereum, reducing duplication.
Meanwhile, this proposal arrives during an ongoing community debate about the rollup-centric roadmap’s trade-offs. Data from L2BEAT shows more than 20 active layer-2 networks securing nearly $40 billion in total value.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has raised concerns, stating in a Feb. 3 X post, “The original vision of L2s and their role in Ethereum no longer makes sense, and we need a new path.” His comments drew mixed reactions from layer-2 builders, reflecting a divide over rollups’ future role.
However, the project is being developed with Ethereum researchers and industry participants, including early contributors from infrastructure providers and DeFi protocols. The group also introduces an “EEZ Alliance” to coordinate standards and support adoption.
Technical details and performance benchmarks are expected in the coming weeks as the group outlines implementation. Gnosis is an early Ethereum infrastructure developer, while Zisk is a zero-knowledge proving project led by Polygon zkEVM creator Jordi Baylina.
