Ethereum Foundation launches post-quantum team, $1M AI prize

  • Ethereum Foundation has formed a dedicated post-quantum team, announced by Justin Drake.
  • The team is led by Thomas Coratger, who holds a PhD in applied mathematics.
  • Leadership cites accelerating timelines after recent advances in quantum research and warnings from key developers.
  • The foundation will hold bi-weekly quantum-security calls, offer a $1 million prize for quantum-resistant work, and publish a transition plan that “targets a full transition in coming years with zero loss of funds and zero downtime.”
  • Optimism/OP Labs plan to replace quantum-vulnerable components within about 10 years; community coordination and chosen schemes will guide the process.

The Ethereum Foundation announced last week that it has created a post-quantum research team, a step made public by Justin Drake. The team is led by Thomas Coratger, who earned a PhD in applied mathematics, as noted in his public post about his background. The foundation cites years of quiet research and accelerating timelines driven by recent advances in quantum computing.

To coordinate work, the foundation will hold new bi-weekly calls for developers and has announced a $1 million prize to help strengthen quantum-resistant cryptographic schemes. It also plans to publish a post-quantum strategy website that, according to its description, “targets a full transition in coming years with zero loss of funds and zero downtime.” The foundation highlighted that Artificial Intelligence will assist research; a staff researcher ran a math-focused AI for eight hours and it solved a difficult lemma in hash-based snarks, a result described as “mind-blowing.”

Outside the foundation, OP Labs and Optimism said they will replace some quantum-vulnerable components within roughly ten years and that the final choices will follow community decisions. Karl Floersch of Optimism wrote that “Users don’t need to take any action today.” and emphasized the stance that “PQ‑safe consensus is not optional.” His statement and company timeline were posted publicly on the project feed online.

This week’s governance items include ongoing votes: CoW DAO voting to fund a developer team, GnosisDAO voting to enable ranked-choice voting, and GMX DAO voting to fund a development team.
