Epstein Emails Reveal Early Ripple vs Stellar Tensions

Blockstream co-founder warned against Ripple and Stellar, citing strategic conflicts and technical hurdles.

  • In 2014, Blockstream co-founder Austin Hill warned against supporting Ripple or Stellar, viewing them as conflicts for Bitcoin-aligned stakeholders.
  • Leaked Mojaloop Foundation emails revealed technical assessments comparing Ripple‘s fork to Stellar, highlighting innovations and integration difficulties.
  • Early adoption of Ripple and its XRP cross-border payments concept was hindered by interoperability issues and network trust, despite its disruptive potential.

Recently surfaced emails from 2014 reveal early crypto insiders, including Blockstream co-founder Austin Hill, explicitly warned financier Jeffrey Epstein about the strategic conflicts of supporting Ripple or Stellar. These Jeffrey Epstein XRP correspondences are now under intense scrutiny for showing how cross-border payment networks were perceived. Hill argued that backing both projects was like supporting “two horses in the same race,” risking reputational damage for Bitcoin-focused investors.

Consequently, this opposition framed Ripple as a challenger within the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem. Meanwhile, leaked discussions from the Mojaloop Foundation provided a technical evaluation of the competing networks. An assessment by Myrle Krantz described Mojaloop as a Ripple fork with significant overlap from Stellar.

The emails highlighted primary innovations like push payments and real-time settlement. However, they also cited significant difficulties, such as integrating with Fineract systems. Consequently, these technical and strategic barriers created early adoption problems for Ripple‘s model.

The combined reports indicate a lack of interoperability and network trust hindered developer and investor confidence. Ripple CTO David Schwartz stated, “It seems quite likely that Hill and others expressed similar views to many other people.” This early industry pushback ultimately shaped the challenging initial landscape for XRP networks.
