- DFINITY completed the Ignition milestone, enabling large language models (LLMs) to run within the Internet Computer ecosystem.
- Developers can now access LLMs from canister smart contracts using simple code in Motoko, Rust, or TypeScript libraries.
- The system uses AI workers to connect on-chain canisters with off-chain LLMs in real time.
- AI workers support several LLMs, including Llama 3.1, Llama 4 Scout, and Qwen 3 32B.
- Real-world applications include chatbots, sentiment analysis for DAOs, and conversational crypto wallet features.
The Ignition milestone from DFINITY is now live, enabling large language models (LLMs) to be used in decentralized applications through the Internet Computer. The update is part of the Internet Computer’s Decentralized AI roadmap and allows developers to integrate LLMs with minimal setup by leveraging AI workers.
According to DFINITY, the new feature makes it possible for smart contract canisters to access LLMs in just a few lines of code. Libraries are available in Motoko, Rust, and TypeScript, making integration accessible for projects built on the Internet Computer.
The solution works by sending requests from canister smart contracts to a dedicated LLM canister via these new libraries. This canister maintains a queue of prompts. AI workers, which act as connectors, continuously poll the canister, process the prompts with off-chain LLMs, and relay responses back to the original canister. Supported language models include Llama 3.1 8B, Llama 4 Scout, and Qwen 3 32B, offering developers a choice of AI models for their applications.
“The Ignition milestone makes it simple for developers to integrate LLMs into their Internet Computer projects, enabling new kinds of dapps, like chatbots, analytics tools, and AI-driven DeFi apps,” the organization stated. Example applications currently in development include crypto wallets with built-in chat features—such as those soon launching in OISY—and decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) that use sentiment analysis to inform portfolio decisions, like the Alice DAO.
Developers can find a demonstration of these capabilities on the ICP Ninja project page and access a live demo here. The system also provides example code and further documentation in the official repository.
The update is expected to broaden the scope of decentralized app development on the Internet Computer, supporting new features like chatbots, analytics, and AI-powered decentralized finance tools. Additional documentation and integration instructions are accessible for those interested in building with these new libraries.
