China Unleashes AI-Powered Robot ‘Bowling Ball’ for Street Crime Prevention

AI-Powered Robot Police Dog Equipped with Facial Recognition Begins Patrolling Streets

  • China deploys RT-G, an AI-powered spherical robot for law enforcement, capable of speeds up to 21 mph with a 10-hour battery life.
  • The robot features facial recognition, tear gas deployment, sound-wave dispersal, and net-capture capabilities.
  • Originally designed by Zhejiang University for space exploration, the technology has been adapted for urban security applications.
  • RT-G can operate both on land and in water, with impact resistance up to four tons.
  • Similar spherical robot technology has been previously tested by NASA and the U.S. Military for different applications.

Chinese authorities have implemented a new AI-powered security robot in several cities, signaling an advancement in automated law enforcement technology. The RT-G, manufactured by Shenzhen-based Logon Technology Co., Ltd., represents a significant shift from traditional security measures to autonomous surveillance systems.

Technical Specifications and Capabilities

The RT-G’s core features include:

  • Maximum speed: 21 miles per hour
  • Operating duration: 10 hours per charge
  • Impact resistance: Up to four tons
  • Mobility system: Internal pendulum mechanism
  • Environment adaptability: Land and water operation

According to technical reports, the robot employs advanced AI algorithms for facial recognition and threat assessment. The system includes multiple defensive capabilities, including tear gas dispensers and a net-deployment mechanism for suspect apprehension.

Development Background and Applications

The technology originated from research at Zhejiang University’s State Key Laboratory of Industrial Control Technology. The researchers initially designed the system for extraterrestrial exploration, stating: "It is highly risky to explore harsh environments and unknown environments, such as wild, fire fields and underground caves. Using mobile robots to replace humans in these exploration tasks can effectively ensure human health and safety."

Similar technologies have been explored by other organizations:

People’s Daily, China’s state media outlet, has documented the RT-G operating alongside human SWAT teams in Wenzhou, demonstrating its integration into existing law enforcement frameworks. The robot’s deployment has expanded to multiple Chinese cities, including Chengdu, where it was first introduced to active service.
