A man known online as Capybara Stocks has become the figurehead for the rising interest in Beyond Meat shares. The individual behind the pseudonym is Dimitri Semenikhin, a 28-year-old Russian living in Dubai and working for his family’s real estate business. Semenikhin started sharing his stock trading ideas on Reddit to test his strategies and invited criticism.
Last week, he revealed a $3 million investment in Beyond Meat. This announcement coincided with a sharp rise in the stock price, attracting widespread attention. Semenikhin reported that the $3 million stake has grown to about $10 million, reflecting a 233% return, though he has been selling some shares during the increase.
“I was attempting to reply to everyone. In the beginning, there were tens of messages, and it was possible to do that at the same time as my main job,” Semenikhin said. When the messages surged to 100 per hour, he stopped responding, saying, “You feel a sense of responsibility for those people because, for some reason, they decided to make investments based on what I say.”
Born to well-known Russian art collectors and raised partly in Monaco, Semenikhin first worked as a science fiction writer and founded startups before entering real estate. Despite the connection to Beyond Meat, he is not vegan and tried its products during the Covid-19 pandemic out of curiosity, finding the taste “quite good”—though he prefers real meat.
Over five years, Semenikhin has invested in various stocks. One of his better returns was on the Ethereum treasury firm SharpLink Gaming, with shares bought at $8 and sold near $35—an approximate 335% profit. He applies the same approach of publishing his investment ideas on Reddit.
Semenikhin told readers he has realized $9 million in profits from his Beyond Meat trade and kept $1 million invested due to the responsibility he feels toward his online followers. He admitted feeling “pretty bad about himself” for missing out on larger profits as the stock soared more than 1,000%.
In an effort to diversify away from Beyond Meat, he has publicly shared his investment in ETHZilla, an Ethereum treasury company, posting a 20-minute YouTube video outlining his reasons. The stock for ETHZilla rose after the video’s release.
