- Consolidation of wealth and allegations of corruption among BRICS leaders and businessmen
- Significant sums from BRICS nations reportedly deposited in Swiss and offshore banks
- Persistent economic inequality within BRICS nations compared to Western countries
- Limited intra-BRICS trade compared to business with Western nations
- Large defense spending by certain BRICS members for reasons of power and security
Jitendra K Tuli, President of Economic & Technical Consultants, wrote an opinion piece addressing the role and conduct of BRICS country leaders. In his article for India-politics/brics-its-role-and-relevance/”>The Times of India, Tuli claimed that leaders and influential businessmen from member countries have funneled large amounts of wealth into Swiss and other offshore bank accounts for decades.
Tuli stated that despite their national wealth, BRICS countries—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—often see large gaps between rich and poor. He emphasized that economic inequality in these nations is far greater than in the United States and other Western economies. According to Tuli, “Leaders and influential people from all of the BRICS countries, including China, have deposited billions of dollars in Swiss and other offshore banks.”
He further argued that internal business within the BRICS group lags far behind the volume of trade each member maintains with leading Western countries. Tuli noted, “They do much less business among themselves than they do with the Western countries.” He also said these leaders tend to focus on power, with countries like Russia, China, Iran, and India spending billions of dollars on military arms. Tuli said, “Russia, China, and Iran do it to satisfy their power hunger to consolidate their own power and subjugate other countries.”
Tuli explained that India’s defense spending is aimed at security concerns, specifically related to China, a BRICS founding member and its neighbor. He pointed out that trade within the BRICS bloc has remained nearly unchanged in recent years.
At a recent summit, Brazilian President Lula da Silva called for peace and human rights. However, Tuli highlighted that many BRICS members openly support activities tied to conflict, saying, “Three members, Russia, China, and Iran, have been involved with mass murders.” He asserted that such issues remain present despite official statements to the contrary.
