Police stated that the resident responded to an online advertisement promoting an investment opportunity. After showing interest, the victim was approached by someone claiming to be an investor. The individual encouraged the victim to invest in cryptocurrency, promising substantial returns on the initial deposit.

Despite investing $18,500 USD, the resident received no profits or returns. "Frauds and Scams are attempted daily through online platforms, phone calls, texts, letters, or faxes. Fraud is a multi-million-dollar enterprise that will only cease when the perpetrators stop profiting," said police in an official statement.

The OPP recommend research and verification of investment opportunities, caution when offered high returns with little risk, and withholding sensitive information from unknown contacts. Additional resources on fraud and cybercrime prevention can be found at the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or by calling 1-888-495-8501.

In a separate case, a 48-year-old Brant County resident faces charges of spousal assault and domestic mischief. The OPP responded to a report involving intimate partners on June 17. The accused is expected to appear in court at a later date. Victims of intimate partner violence can seek support by contacting Nova Vita Brant at 519-752-4357, or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122.

Additionally, Brant OPP are looking for three suspects involved in the theft of liquor from a business on Mechanic Street in Paris. The theft took place shortly after 8 p.m. on June 19, and the suspects left the scene in a dark-coloured sedan. Individuals with relevant information are asked to contact the Brant County OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
