- Sanders criticized technology company leaders for focusing on profits rather than worker welfare.
- He called for democratic oversight in shaping AI policies, aiming to ensure benefits reach the wider public and not just business executives.
- The conversation highlighted concerns about AI replacing human connection, with Sanders urging caution regarding technology’s social impacts.
Sen. Bernie Sanders appeared on “The Joe Rogan Experience” to address concerns that rapid progress in artificial intelligence and robotics could eliminate millions of American jobs. He outlined this threat during a public interview, emphasizing that corporate leaders may benefit financially while workers are left vulnerable.
During the discussion, Sanders called for sweeping policy changes. He suggested reducing the standard workweek to 32 hours, implementing universal basic income, and strengthening labor protections to address possible mass unemployment caused by automation.
Sanders argued that major technology company CEOs are not prioritizing employee wellbeing. “They couldn’t care less,” he said, referring to corporate executives and their response to automation’s impact on the workforce. He warned that robots and AI could soon replace many jobs in factories and other sectors, urging that “technology must serve working people, not just billionaires like Musk.”
The senator’s warnings come as experts raise alarms about increasing worker displacement due to automation. During a previous CNN town hall, Sanders expressed concerns regarding job cuts under government efficiency policies and indicated that AI could worsen these trends, especially if decisions remain in the hands of a few executives.
To counter these risks, Sanders also repeated his support for guaranteed education, universal healthcare, and a higher minimum wage.
He warned about potential social problems, like the rise of loneliness as humans turn to AI companions instead of real social connections. “All I would say at this moment: The answer is not to fall in love with your AI creature,” said Sanders, underscoring concerns about technology’s effect on basic human relationships.
