- An armed gang in Paris attempted but failed to kidnap the daughter and grandson of a prominent French crypto executive.
- This attack is part of a series of recent violent incidents targeting leaders in France’s cryptocurrency industry.
- Victims resisted, sustained injuries, and the incident is under police investigation, with reports of previous similar cases involving threats and mutilation.
On Tuesday in Paris, an armed group tried to kidnap the daughter and young grandson of the chief executive and co-founder of Paymium, a leading French cryptocurrency exchange. The attempted abduction occurred on a public street, with the attackers fleeing empty-handed after a struggle with the victims.
According to local media and reports from the AFP news agency, four masked individuals jumped out of a white van and grabbed the woman and her child. When the woman’s partner tried to help, the attackers struck him. All three suffered injuries and received hospital treatment.
Police told AFP that the mother showed resistance by seizing one of the attacker’s handguns and throwing it aside. “She grabbed the weapon and tossed it away,” officers said. The commotion and victims’ screams alerted nearby passersby, prompting the gang to escape the scene in their van without taking hostages or valuables.
Investigating authorities confirmed the victims are closely related to the leadership of Paymium. This incident follows a worrying trend of violence against cryptocurrency industry executives in France, as highlighted by local security agencies.
In earlier cases, French police recently rescued the father of a crypto entrepreneur who had been held captive for two days at an Airbnb south of Paris. During his imprisonment, his captors severed one of his fingers before his release. In January, David Balland, co-founder of crypto company Ledger, and his wife were also kidnapped from their home. Their assailants mutilated Balland’s hand and sent a video of his severed finger to his business partners while demanding ransom.
No cash or cryptocurrency was reported stolen in these cases. The authorities have not yet commented on any potential connections between the incidents. All matters remain under active investigation.
