AI Tools Drive Spike in Enterprise Data Loss, Report Warns

  • Enterprises are facing significant risks of data loss related to AI-powered tools and cloud platforms.
  • The Zscaler ThreatLabz 2025 Data Risk Report analyzed more than 1.2 billion blocked transactions from 2024.
  • AI applications such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot contributed to millions of incidents involving sensitive data exposure.
  • Major sources of data loss include SaaS apps, email services, and file-sharing platforms, each with millions of violations.
  • A unified, proactive approach to data protection is recommended for securing sensitive information in an AI-driven landscape.

Organizations using cloud-based and AI-driven tools are experiencing increased risks of sensitive data loss, as shown in a recent report published in July 2025. Between February and December 2024, the Zscaler Zero Trust Exchange recorded and blocked over 1.2 billion risky transactions. The report indicates a major trend: AI applications, such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, played a key role in millions of incidents where sensitive data, including social security numbers, was exposed or lost.

The findings also reveal that enterprises faced more than 872 million data loss violations across more than 3,000 different SaaS (Software as a Service) apps. Email remained a top source of leakage, with nearly 104 million transactions leading to billions of sensitive data exposures. File-sharing platforms showed a sharp rise as well, with 212 million transactions involving data loss incidents, according to the report.

“The 2025 Data Risk Report sheds light on the multifaceted data security risks enterprises face in today’s digitally enabled world,” the report states. Organizations are urged to consider a unified, AI-driven strategy for data security as the use of generative AI tools and cloud services continues to expand. The report provides a comprehensive overview of current risks, what is driving them, and possible solutions.
