Rapper Afroman’s namesake cryptocurrency token, $FRO, has experienced a staggering price surge after he won a closely-watched defamation lawsuit against police in Ohio. According to the verdict, a jury sided with the artist, real name Joseph E. Foreman, on Wednesday, concluding a three-year legal battle.
Foreman was sued for creating a series of music videos mocking officers who raided his home in 2022. The videos, which were played in court, included songs like “Lemon Pound Cake” about an officer looking at a snack. Consequently, the officers claimed the content caused them “humiliation, ridicule, mental distress, embarrassment and loss of reputation.”
However, Foreman argued his actions were protected free speech and an attempt to recover losses from the raid’s damages. He also promoted his crypto token on Instagram six months prior to the trial. Meanwhile, the token’s market cap surged 4,685% to a high of $335,000 as the trial concluded.
Following the legal victory, Foreman was filmed celebrating and shouting, “Yeah! We did it America!… Freedom of speech!” He had even preemptively released a song called the “Batteram Hymn Of The Police Whistle Blower.” The song references the corruption he alleges.
