- Spar supermarkets across Switzerland now accept Cardano‘s ADA token for grocery purchases via an Open Crypto Pay system.
- The integration allows direct payments from ADA wallets with lower transaction fees for merchants, extending a nationwide rollout begun in August 2025.
- In a separate development, Tether and the city of Lugano committed $6.4 million to further the region’s ambitions as a global digital asset hub.
Customers can now use Cardano’s ADA token to pay for groceries at 137 Spar supermarkets in Switzerland, marking a significant real-world application for cryptocurrency in retail. This integration, facilitated by Swiss fintech firm DFX.swiss, leverages the Open Crypto Pay system to process transactions directly from ADA wallets in real time.
Consequently, merchants benefit from transaction costs that are about two-thirds lower than those associated with traditional card payments. Frederik Gregaard, CEO of the Swiss-based Cardano Foundation, described this as the “beginning of a fundamental shift in how value moves through society,” signaling a shift from experimentation to genuine financial transformation.
Meanwhile, Switzerland’s broader push to become a crypto-friendly hub gained further momentum with a separate financial commitment. As data from Tether shows, the company and the city of Lugano have committed 5 million Swiss francs ($6.4 million) to a second phase of development through 2030. This initiative aims to position Lugano as a global hub for digital asset infrastructure, building on existing programs that allow residents to pay certain fees in Bitcoin and USDT.
