  • YouTube will expand AI creation tools in 2026 while increasing detection and labeling of low-quality synthetic videos.
  • The company plans to reduce so-called “AI Slop.”
  • YouTube will strengthen likeness and identity protections and build on its Content ID system to give creators more control over faces and voices in AI content.
  • Creators must disclose realistic synthetic or altered media, and the platform will label content made with its own internal AI tools.
  • New creator features include AI-generated Shorts using creators’ likenesses and expanded AI-assisted music creation as the platform leans toward TV-style, living-room viewing.

In a community letter linked as a letter to the community, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan said the platform will broaden AI tools in 2026 while stepping up measures against low-quality synthetic content to protect the viewing experience. Mohan said the company will focus on reducing what he called “AI Slop.” He explained that YouTube will extend systems that have fought spam and clickbait to limit low-quality, repetitive AI content.

The company will strengthen protections for likeness and identity and expand its Content ID framework so creators and artists have more control over how their faces and voices are used in AI-generated media. “Because labels aren’t always enough, we remove any harmful synthetic media that violates our Community Guidelines,” Mohan wrote.

Creators will be required to disclose realistic synthetic or altered media, and YouTube said it will label content produced with its own internal AI tools. Mohan also noted support for legislative efforts, writing “Finally, we remain committed to protecting creative integrity by supporting critical legislation like the NO FAKES Act.”

At the same time, the platform will expand AI-assisted creation tools for creators, including features that let creators generate Shorts using AI models of themselves and broader AI music capabilities. Mohan framed the technology as a creative aid, saying “AI will act as a bridge between curiosity and understanding.” A related market widget accompanied the announcement.
