- A critical vulnerability in a proposed Ripple XRP Ledger amendment could have allowed attackers to drain funds without private keys.
- The flaw was discovered by an AI security bot before the feature was activated, preventing any loss of funds.
- The patch and emergency response averted a potential crisis that could have destabilized the entire XRP ecosystem.
A critical security flaw in the Ripple XRP Ledger was identified and patched in late February 2026, averting a potential multi-billion dollar exploit. The vulnerability, found in a not-yet-activated amendment, was discovered by a security engineer and an AI bot from Cybersecurity firm Cantina. According to a report from the XRP Ledger Foundation, the bug in the signature-validation logic would have allowed an attacker to execute transactions and drain victim accounts.
Consequently, the foundation confirmed the amendment was still in its voting phase and had not been activated, meaning no user funds were ever at risk. Validators were advised to vote against the problematic change, and an emergency software release was published to block it permanently. The XRPLF stated that a successful large-scale exploit could have “destabilized the ecosystem” and caused a major loss of confidence.
Meanwhile, the emergence of advanced AI cybersecurity tools played a pivotal role in this discovery. Cantina’s autonomous bug hunter, named Apex, found the flaw through static code analysis. This incident highlights a growing trend where AI, like the recently launched Claude Code Security from Anthropic, is being deployed to find vulnerabilities that humans might miss. Cantina CEO Hari Mulackal noted the find prevented what could have been “the largest security hack by dollar value in the world,” referencing the ledger’s substantial market capitalization.
