- X is requiring users who use passkeys or hardware security keys for two-factor authentication (2FA) to re-enroll their keys by November 10, 2025.
- Failure to re-enroll will result in locked accounts until users update their 2FA settings or disable 2FA.
- The change supports the retirement of the twitter[.]com domain following the platform’s rebranding to X.
- The update applies only to security keys; other 2FA methods like authenticator apps are unaffected.
- Users can follow a specified process on X’s security settings page to complete re-enrollment.
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has announced that users must re-enroll their passkeys or hardware security keys—such as Yubikeys—used for two-factor authentication (2FA) by November 10, 2025. The re-enrollment is necessary to maintain access to accounts.
According to an official post by X’s Safety team, accounts where the security key has not been re-enrolled by the deadline will be locked. Locked users must then either complete re-enrollment, select a different 2FA method, or disable 2FA to regain access. The company still recommends keeping 2FA enabled for security reasons.
The move is linked to X’s ongoing effort to retire the twitter[.]com domain following its rebranding in July 2023 after acquisition by Elon Musk’s companies. As the company explained, “Security keys enrolled as a 2FA method are currently tied to the twitter[.]com domain. Re-enrolling your security key will associate them with x[.]com, allowing us to retire the Twitter domain.”
Users who authenticate via other 2FA methods, including authenticator apps, are not required to take action. X also supports 2FA via text messages, but this option is limited to non-Premium subscribers since March 2023.
Users can complete the re-enrollment process by visiting their security keys settings on X. The steps involve removing existing keys, selecting the security key option, verifying the account with a password and confirmation code, and then registering the key by inserting and activating it.
Detailed re-enrollment instructions are available through the platform’s help pages. This update ensures users’ hardware security keys work with the new x[.]com domain and supports the platform’s transition away from the Twitter identity.
